About Osa Vive!
Osa Vive! is a Costa Rican non-profit association created to protect the communities and environment of the Southern Zone that are threatened by irresponsible development. We believe this area is incredibly special. We are determined to prevent monied interests from disrespecting this area as they did in Guanacaste, where developers make money by destroying the environment and Ticos live in poverty. Healthy communities depend on a healthy environment

Foundings
- Osa Vive! was founded in 2018, but the non-profit board of directors was established in 2019.
- Osa Vive! was founded by a resident of Ojochal who was concerned about the irresponsible practices of a local developer.
- We are a grassroots non-profit organization that is funded by public contributions and pro bono work provided by dedicated members.
Background: Costa Rica has strong environmental protection laws. Unfortunately, resources for enforcement are lacking thus many developments (large and small) proceed without proper permits. Some of these developments illegally cut trees, illegally move earth, illegally build roads, illegally fill in creeks, and more. These actions harm our environment and harm local communities. We will not stand by and watch; we take action. We educate the public and we file legal actions to make sure that Costa Rica’s excellent environmental laws are respected as they should be. We believe that everyone benefits from a healthy environment.
Mission
Osa Vive! fights against irresponsible development in the Southern Zone. We are working for wildlife and habitat protection, clean abundant water, and empowered local communities. Through education, legal action, and government accountability we are creating a better world for future generations.
Our Approach
- LITIGATION: We hold irresponsible developers legally accountable. That creates legal precedents and sends a message to other developers: In this part of Costa Rica people are paying attention and demand that all environmental laws be followed.
- COLLABORATION: We have partnered with other non-profits such as Innoceana, Reserva Playa Tortuga, CR Coral Reefs and ASANA to spread our united message of local environmental conservation. We’re also working closely with various governmental agencies like MINAE, SINAC and SETENA to procure accurate, easy to understand information about the proper protocols for permitting and reporting so that we can enhance our goal of education.
- AWARENESS: We use our online presence and in person events to share environmental news and educate the public about regulations, potentially illegal situations and solutions.
